What I Watched in November 2022

Here’s what I watched in November 2022! I’ve been sick so this may be a bit shorter than some of my other Monthly lists so apologies.

Pearl (2022) - (6/10)

Really is not phenomenal in any way. I didn’t feel anything coming away from this, and it mesmerizes me that people prefer this hollow feeling film to X which felt energized with style and depth. Mia Goth slays however and was captivating to watch.

Wendell & Wind (2022) - (4/10)

Stunning animation, but otherwise a very surface-level kid’s movie that feels like it's ticking boxes without giving any of its characters depth in any sense. Key & Peele have good chemistry, but that’s really all I enjoyed. This was hard to finish for me.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) - (8/10)

A harrowing war film that was genuinely difficult to watch at times. Amazingly well shot and directed, and the production design was fantastic as well. A true anti-war film from top to bottom.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2022) - (8/10)

One of the sweetest films I’ve seen in a while. Truly heartfelt from beginning to end, with wonderful characters, quiet moments, and genuinely funny moments.

My Policeman (2022) - (5/10)

One of the blandest films of the year with a husk of a performance from Harry Styles. All of this really does is queer-bait Styles into getting his diehards to watch this, and I’m sure it works, but this didn’t even feel like a film. Brokeback Mountain for British folk.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008) - (6/10)

I’m being easy on this because I watched it with my girlfriend. A fun, light-hearted Disney movie with, you know, actual heart. Unlike 90% of the shit that comes out of Disney nowadays.

Bullet Train (2022) - (5/10)

The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) - (8/10)

Causeway (2022) - (7/10)

A very quiet, simple acting showcase for both Jennifer Lawrence and the great Brian Tyree Henry. I’ll watch anything that guy’s in, even Bullet Train. Very surface level, but an incredibly easy watch that had me invested.

Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me (2022) - (5/10)

A tone-deaf documentary that is basically showing off Selena Gomez as the Queen of Woe without any real resolution whatsoever. Gomez seems to be pandering to the camera in every scene here and comes off as immature and childlike in a lot of scenes. Maybe I’m in the minority here but this did not connect with me at all.

The Fabelmans (2022) - (8/10)

On the Count of Three (2022) - (7/10) (Rewatch)

Pretty great but those last few minutes really go off the rails. Was scared at how much some of this resonated with me though.

Turning Red (2022) - (5/10)

This was not for me at all. The animation was stunning, and I loved the anime-like style of it all and a very anime-like finale, but this did not work in any capacity outside of those stylistic choices.

Moulin Rouge! (2022) - (6/10)

So Luhrmann in every way but it never backs down from that, so I was down. I’m not really into musicals like that but this was still fun.

The Menu (2022) - (6/10)

Smile (2022) - (5/10)

I’m might be a scaredy cat, but this was genuinely terrifying at times? And well-directed? But then there would be some random weird directorial choice that didn’t work at all here and there that would derail everything. The very low budget shows in the costume design, and something about that really put a bad taste in my mouth.

Speak No Evil (2022) - (7/10)

Deeply unsettling, but wholly interesting all the way through until the end. A very slow burn that reaches a horrifying conclusion. Definitely check this out.

Avatar (2009) - (6/10) (Rewatch)

I haven’t seen this since I was a kid, and I didn’t even see it in theaters. This movie, to be crude, is right on the cusp of being mid, if not for the absolutely magnificent and magical world that Cameron and his VFX team crafted. It’s insane, and honestly a little sad, that this movie looks better than most modern blockbusters, and it’s literally 13 years old. I’m extremely excited about the sequel, and genuinely hope it’s like the best movie ever made.

Knives Out (2019) - (9/10) (Rewatch)

So much fun, so many good characters, and a story with actual heart at the center. Chris Evans as Ransom is one of my favorite villains of all time. A must for fall rewatches.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) - (6/10)

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022) - (7/10)

Blade Runner 2049 (2017) - (9/10) (Rewatch)

The most beautifully shot film ever made? Mayyyyyyyyyyybe. Every time I come home I watch this on my big TV. Some of the exposition flashbacks still bug me but other than that, perfect.

Thanks for reading! See you next month!
