What I Watched in October 2022

Here’s what I watched in October!

October 1 - American Psycho (2000) - 10/10 (Rewatch)

The character development of my stance on this movie is all over the place, because I feel like I’ve never been able to truly understand it until now. It’s a shame that a lot of heavy right-wingers use Patrick Bateman as an idol, because what he “stands for” in this movie is not meant at all to be taken at face value. It’s a meticulously crafted satire about male isolation, and Christian Bale is just, well, killer.

October 2 - American Psycho II: All American Girl (2002) - 1/10

I have never seen movie that is this bad in my entire life. I cannot think of one redeemable quality about this whatsoever, I suffered through every second of this, and was laughing at how systemically atrocious this is from top to bottom. Besides the fact that this movie even exists (and that it can even be considered a sequel to American Psycho), what fascinates me about this movie is that it actually has potential in its concept. There’s a lot you can do satirically with the struggle for academic validation at university with a serial killer protagonist, and yet, they don’t even step anywhere near that concept. A truly atrocious film.

October 8 - House on Haunted Hill (1959) - 4/10

A silly, goofy, spooky movie. That’s really about it! I felt like this could’ve been a lot more fun, but the characters were all very underutilized and underdeveloped. The pacing is also so slow, which is a warcrime for a movie that’s this short.

October 9 - Werewolf by Night (2022) - 4/10

Can’t for the life of me understand what is to gloat over about this TV special. It uses its 30s Horror aesthetic as a flimsy trojan horse to further advance the overall mythos of the MCU, without actually having any real legs to stand on in terms of individuality and character. Marvel has really lost me lately.

October 12 - I Saw the Devil (2010) - 7/10

A movie that could’ve been stretched into a 3-hour odyssey that still would’ve held my attention. The duality of the two leads and the tension they held was fantastic, and the action was surprisingly brutal and well-helmed. A very good thriller that I’m hesitant to revisit on its brutal merit alone.

October 12 - The Shining (1980) - 7/10

The book is so much better than the movie, and I say that with my WHOLE CHEST. The film, while certainly expertly crafted, is devoid of all the human emotion that makes the book so wonderful. I’m sure this was an inspired intention, but I definitely would like this film more if I hadn’t read the book.

October 13 - Donnie Darko (2001) - 7/10

Constantly confusing, and downright weird, but very brave in its presentation. It’s very conservative in its exposition, and takes it time to fully develop its concept. I can definitely see myself rewatching this someday to fully understand it from top to bottom, but shoutout Evil Dead! Can’t believe that girl fell asleep while watching it!

October 13 - Beetlejuice (1988) - 8/10

So weirdly 80s, so oddly Tim Burton, I love it! This movie doesn’t care about how strange it is, and it so abruptly casts you into this world with no hesitation in the best way possible! I love the costumes, I love the effects, I love the 80s. Also, made me appreciate Heathers more.

October 14 - Red Eye (2005) - 7/10

My first ever Wes Craven film and first of many this month, a very tight and exciting thriller. Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams are both wonderful, and this movie is directed with such a sharp edge that I was constantly engaged. Feels a little bit dated, but I think it works well within the confines of the 2000s era.

October 15 - Paranorman (2012) - 6/10

Very cute and fun, but a lot like Kubo, really falls off towards the second act and loses an incredible amount of steam. The concept of this film goes from simple, to very heavy very quickly, and we lose sight of the really fun characters that were being setup in act one, and by the end they’re completely forgotten, which is sad!

October 17 - Scream (1996) - 7/10

My 100th new watch of the year! I can’t believe I finally did it! Besides that though, this movie was really fun and hooked me enough to watch all of the proceeding sequels! I see myself revisiting this very soon!

October 18 - Scream 2 (1997) - 6/10

There were definitely times during this where I was lowkey loving it more than the first, I like the character interactions more, I think it’s more intense, and the pacing is immaculate. But the ending twist got a little too scooby-doo for me (which is what all these movies sort of are lol). I still had fun nonetheless!

October 19 - A Quiet Place (2018) - 8/10

One of my favorite horror movies on its concept alone, im fascinated with the originality and execution of this idea. Krasinski’s first horror outing is so strong, and his directioral legs get so much stronger in Part II as well. The labor scene is one of the most effortlessly intense scenes in horror history, and reaches the most epic climax imaginable!

October 20 - An American Werewolf in London (1981) - 8/10

Just figured out that this movie invented the Oscar category for Best Make-up, which is fucking sick and if any movie derves that cultivate that category it’s this. Hilarious, weird, and unafraid to just be unapologetically crazy at every turn.

October 21 - Nope (2022) - 9/10 (Rewatch)

I love this movie so much, that I watched it again the very next day. Seeing this in a packed theater back to back is one of my most memorable movie experiences. Thank you Jordan Peele.

October 22 - Scream 3 (2000) - 5/10

Probably my least favorite Scream movie, but still enjoyable. Don’t know why this franchise thinks it’s a good idea to keep retconning Gale and Dewey’s relationship, but it literally never fails.

October 22 - Scream 4 (2011) - 6/10

Banger. So much fun, and does what Scream (2022) tried and failed to do, in the best way possible. Very likeable new characters, and a very cool twist. Feels a little dated but that’s kind of what makes Scream movies what they are at this point.

October 22 - Nope (2022) - 10/10 (Rewatch)

Yup, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Not perfect, but a perfect experience in my eyes. “The Run” is genuinely one of the most insane movie scenes I’ve ever seen in my life and genuinely makes me emotional when I watch it because of how meticulously crafted it all is. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

October 23 - Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) - 8/10

Definitely enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would, it served as a nice palette cleanse from my Halloween spooky movie marathon. A very weird and thoughtful mediation on a lot of different things, I loved the music!

October 23 - The Batman (2022) - 9/10 (Rewatch)

Took a dr*@k everytime someone said “Jesus”. Was fun.

October 24 - Scream (2022) - 5/10

Can’t believe this franchise still exists in 2022 and is alive and kicking, but this dropped off pretty steeply in the third act. It got very messy and dumb, and not in that classic Wes Craven way, but more of just a thoughtless horror movie way that I didn’t really jive with.

October 24 - A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - 7/10

Wes Craven is a genius. The originality and the terror of such an idea, matched with all of the practical execution on display here must’ve absolutely terrified audiences when it came out, and the ending still is horrifying to this day.

October 25 - Barbarian (2022) - 8/10 (Rewatch)

Such a fun movie. Found myself waiting patiently for the big scare to happen, but the build-up still works. This definitely loses its scare after the inital jump, but Justin Long’s character keeps me so engaged through and through, and even though he’s a dirtbag I still think of him from time to time…

October 26 - Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) - 8/10 (Rewatch)

FUCKING banger. Beautifully shot and directed, AMAZING performances from each and everyone of these cast members. Slayful score, and Rachel Sennott you will ALWAYS be famous. Thank you.

October 28 - Halloween (1978) - 6/10

Yes it innovated horror, but there is not one person in this performance who isn’t giving a goofy ass performance. The score is so good, and I love John Carpenter, but this just ain’t my jam fam.

October 29 - The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) - 7/10

Need to rewatch this desperately, not a big fan of my theater experience with this one but the movie slayed, would love to actually be able to hear it next time around. Also Tim Curry is a god by all definitions of the word.

Thanks for reading! See you next month!
